![]() ![]() Allen Leibensperger eventually would own nine Midgets and operate them as the Gordon Racing Team out of Allentown, Pennsylvania, during the 1930s and 1940s. That’s right, Evinrude! The outboard engine made famous in boating circles now had an outboard engine for Midgets as well. They even sold their Evinrude/ELTO 4-cylinder engine for the Midget. ![]() ELTO changed all this with a Midget that you could order and build at home. ![]() With money at a premium during the 1930s, these creations were most definitely out-of-reach for many pocketbooks. Often sporting purebred Offenhauser engines, they were certainly not cheap. Until ELTO came along, Midgets were expensive creations that mimicked their big brothers that raced in the Indianapolis 500. ELTO Midgets became a smart choice for cash-strapped aspiring racers during the Depression years. ![]()
